New Fav Recipe

While I was in Boston I faithfully read the Globe every day. Surprisingly, I got some really delicious recipes from the daily magazine. I made one of my favorites last night and wanted to share it -- a classic Caesar salad with a twist, kale instead of romaine and a non-egg based dressing. I know, this might sound dubious, but I highly recommend giving it a try, you won't be disappointed. The only slight alternation being I am not a fan of anchovy so dropped that ingredient from the recipe.

Kale Caesar

Kale Caesar(Sheryl Julian/Globe Staff)
November 11, 2009

You might be skeptical about making a salad with raw, somewhat bitter, leafy greens. I was when a friend suggested it. Tuscan kale, also known as lacinato or dinosaur “dino’’ kale, has thin, flat, deep-green, bubble-textured leaves. It’s most flavorful and tender after the first frost, and it’s often sauteed or stirred into soups. Following my friend’s lead, I tossed the raw greens, cut into ribbons, with an eggless Caesar dressing made with lemon juice, mashed anchovies, garlic, Parmesan, and a stream of olive oil. We topped the kale with large croutons sauteed in olive oil until crispy on the outside and chewy in the middle. Unlike most leafy greens, raw kale benefits from wilting slightly in the dressing, which tenderizes it. The salad is low-maintenance and healthy. This was love at first bite.

5anchovy fillets, rinsed, patted dry, and chopped or1/2 tablespoon anchovy paste
2cloves garlic, smashed
1tablespoon lemon juice
1tablespoon red wine vinegar
3/4cup olive oil
1teaspoon black pepper
1/3cup grated Parmesan
3cups diced bread
Salt, to taste
1pound (about 2 bunches) Tuscan, lacinato, or dinosaur kale, stemmed and sliced into 1/4-inch ribbons
1. In a food processor or blender, blend the anchovies and 1 clove of the garlic. Add the lemon juice and vinegar. With the motor running, add 1/2 cup of the oil in a thin steady stream. Add pepper and Parmesan.

2. In a large skillet over medium heat, heat the remaining 1/4 cup oil . Add the remaining 1 clove garlic and the bread cubes. Cook, stirring often, for 5 minutes or until crisp and golden. Discard the garlic and transfer the croutons to a bowl. Toss with salt.

3. Five to 10 minutes before serving, in a salad bowl, combine the kale and enough dressing to coat it. Add the croutons. Jill Santopietro

Happy eating!!

Re Acclimating

I cannot lie, it was hard arriving back in PVB - alone, without children or Jim, and the weather was dreary and rainy. It hit me hard.... but a few days in and I am feeling better. Reconnecting with friends, sharing good food and wine, and golf have eased the transition. There is much to be done after being gone for six months, not least of which is re acclimating to the weather! To be sure it was a very mild fall in New England. The coldest day I experienced was the day I departed on my trip back to Florida. But I forgot how sticky the humidity makes the air and the temp tomorrow is expected to reach 80* before the cold front from the west arrives Thursday morning.

I spent several hours over several days getting the 10 foot Christmas tree up and lit. Anyone who has a pre-lit tree understands the frustration of getting all the twinkly little lights to work. It is a labor of Christmas love. I persevered, they are all lit - let the ornamentation begin! I look forward to decorating, baking, and spending the holidays with the fam.

You Know It's Time To Head South.....

...when the Frog Pond on Boston Common opens for skating season (last night!).
...when the newspapers and magazines are full of skiing advertisements and articles.
...the streets of the city look a little more like Christmas every day.

Bye, bye Boston. Hello sunny, warm Ponte Vedra Beach.

Christmas Nostalgia

This post is for those whose Christmas memories include an annual trek to Downtown Crossing Boston to view the Jordan Marsh (now Macy's) Christmas display The Enchanted Village. A series of Victorian era Christmas vignettes. Jordan's Furniture (no relation to JM) recently purchased and refurbished the displays. They are available for viewing in all their past splendor at the JF Avon store complete with snow which is periodically switched on to the delight of small, wide-eyed children. I recently visited JF and enjoyed the retooled displays. They are very nicely done and it was heartwarming to see the kids running in awe from display to display and their excitement when it started "snowing". If you decide to go, try to visit at an off time. The entrance reminded me of a Disney wait line (about 8 chain lined switchbacks) and visitors must walk through the ENTIRE store upon exiting. If you can get by the obvious commercial and holiday hype, it is a fun walk down memory lane.

Escape From The City

Not that I need to escape, but I was looking forward to spending an overnight on Martha's Vineyard in the fall with Nancy, Kim, and JDog. So with TS Ida bearing down on southeastern Mass I headed to Woods Hole and the ferry in the wind and rain. Even though the weekend was on and off rainy, cloudy, and muggy, the house was comfy, cozy, and quiet. A nice indoor fire along with a flute of bubbly took the chill off. During a break in the rain, Java raced between the dunes and the surf with unleashed abandon. South beach was wild and windswept.

Nancy and Kim, Java was off exploring.

Edgartown was devoid of summer crowds and we enjoyed a lunch out and some late season shopping in the few stores still open for business.

At the Atlantic with cocktails, of course.

Just some of the reasons the off season on the Vineyard is just as appealing as the hectic months of summer. Our last hurrah at Kotemy Circle is fast approaching when we celebrate Thanksgiving. We will all be there to say goodbye to Paradise North and look forward to our new adventure down the street on Mill Hill Farm Road in 2011.

Chillin' at 1 Kotemy Circle.

Night Noise

It has been a challenge these last few months getting used to the noise of the city. The sounds of the street seem like they are right out our window even though we are on the 32nd floor. Most times the middle of the night seems like the middle of the day. Not only are all the buildings lit up as if it were daylight, there is the constant rat-a-tat-tat of a jack hammer, beep beep of trucks backing up, police sirens, fire truck sirens, jet planes taking off and landing, motorcycles, it is non-stop. Except for last night. Last night was eerily quiet, but in a good way. Now if my hot flashes didn't wake me every hour or so I'd be all set for a good nights rest.

October Celebrations

October was full of fun with Colleen coming to Boston for fall break from Villanova, the first annual Vineyard Wives Getaway, and Jim's birthday.

Colleen spent the first weekend of fall break with Melissa at Duke. Colleen's friend, Sarah, who is at UNC-Wilmington, drove up to Duke for the weekend and the girls had a reunion of sorts. It was the first time she had seen Melissa and any of her friends from PVB since school started. She then flew to Boston for the remainder of the week most of which was spent with her dad.

Out on the town.

While Colleen was relaxing in Boston, several of my friends from Ponte Vedra who are also new empty nesters and the mother's of Colleen's friends flew in for the first Vineyard Wives Getaway. We had lots of fun sipping wine by the fire, eating, sightseeing, and catching up on our lives now that all the children are in college or beyond. It was just what the doctor ordered!

Luckily Colleen and Emily were on hand to enjoy a nice dinner and birthday cake out with Jim and some friends. Unfortunately, I contracted a cold and was out of commission for Jim's birthday celebration and Melissa was at school:( I'm hoping Mel can make it up for a weekend soon. I miss her!

Party!

Sadly, Jim has left Boston. Happily, he is excited to be embarking on a new and challenging venture at United Health Group in Minneapolis. He is getting acclimated and settled into his new job and new digs at the Calhoun Beach Club (that's right beach club). No snow yet, but maybe this weekend. I'll keep you posted.

Go Wildcats!

Colleen has taken to the collegiate life without a hiccup. Okay, maybe one hiccup, she overslept and missed class one morning. But our recent Parent's Weekend at Villanova was filled with laughter and fun. We started off the trip by taking Colleen and four friends to dinner, always a treat for the parents and students. No surprise that we loved her new friends. Jim golfed and the girls had mani/pedis and hit the mall. Family entertainment for the weekend was a comedy improv night with Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood. They were performers on the hit TV program Whose Line Is It Anyway with Drew Carey. It was an interactive performance including random members of the audience. Totally hilarious! We laughed until our sides hurt for 90 minutes.

Colleen, Bre, Wildcat, Alexi and sister.

Saturday afternoon Colleen donned her NovaNation t-shirt and we headed to Villanova stadium to cheer the Wildcats (56) to victory over the Northeastern Huskies (7). We enjoyed sushi that night at Nectar's, a restaurant I think we will visit again and again over the next few years.

At Nectar's.

The weekend came to an all too soon end and we took off bright and early Sunday morning under rainy skies for Boston and home.

Reconnecting

When Jim and I were newly married 28 years ago, living in the city was always something we dreamed of doing when our children were older, something hard to imagine as young parents dealing with babies, toddlers, and the trying years of tweens and teens. But, viola, our time has come! The girls are happily settled in work and college. After living in Florida for the past 10+ years it has been fun quasi-living in Boston. Not only to explore the city and spend time with each other, but to reconnect with old friends. Being busy with day to day living and activities, there is always an excuse not to sit down and pick up the phone, email, or even (gasp) send a hand written note. Days, weeks, months, then years go by and before you know it, it seems almost awkward to make contact. So more time goes by and friendships that once seemed like they would last forever become a distant, pleasant memory. It takes two to stay in touch, but one to initiate the dialogue. Not that this is anything new, but in a time of constantly evolving technology staying in touch couldn't be easier, so why is it that we don't? As we prepare to make yet another move across the country to another state, another city, I renew my determination to take the time to stay connected.

Villa-Lots-O-Fun

Loaded up and ready to go drop Colleen at Villanova University outside Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for the start of freshman year. Here we come Villa-Lots-O-Fun!!! Wow, college drop off is intense. Note however, Jim and I were taking a golf road trip and dropping off furniture for Melissa at Duke. Still....

Freshman all live on one section of campus in a cluster of freshman dorms, dining hall, fitness facility, etc. Very nice, clean, and friendly, if small for three freshman girls. For anyone wanting to send snail mail and/or care packages her address is:

Villanova University
Good Counsel Hall, Room 204
P.O. Box 1421
800 Lancaster Avenue
Villanova, PA 19085-1679

Colleen's roomies are from New Jersey and Martha's Vineyard (small world!). Freshman orientation began Thursday night and lasted until Sunday. The students were split into groups of 23 with an upperclassman as OC (orientation counselor). They participated in team building activities, dined together, and got to know students from other dorms to introduce them to different kids and broaden their friend base.

Kelly (NJ), Alexia (MVY), Colleen in their room.

On the way to the crab bash a week later, we stopped in Pinehurst to play golf, walk the hallowed ground of the pros, and to pose with Payne Stewart (since we didn't like the pros). What fun.

Back on MVY for the end of summer in New England, labor day on Chappy Beach. How tranquil. Is this what we have in store as empty nesters? Maybe too tranquil, time will tell.

Tranquility.

Sunset at Chappy, good-bye summer.

The Girls of Summer

Each of our daughters has brought friends to our home on MVY this summer. Since we don't see the girls as much as we used to when they all lived at home, the friends they choose to bring home to meet family provides a secret peek into who they are and tells us a little of what their lives are like while they are away. We have thoroughly enjoyed meeting the wonderful people they call friends and getting the peek into who our children are when they aren't with us.

Melissa and Katrina. Katrina is from a large family in the Chicago area and a recent Duke grad heading to New Orleans for a year of community service.

Ingrid, Emily Bowen and Em. All young professionals rooming together  in Brookline.

Colleen with Sarah who will be at UNC Wilmington this fall. A music lover and guitar player who inspired the Bean to pick up guitar again.

Colleen with Sarah who will be at FSU this fall. I think she said she is the 10th person in her family to attend there.

Hayley who started at Florida this summer, Colleen, and Mel who will be at Alabama this fall. Both repeat visitors!

Makes me think back to when I was bringing friends home to meet the family and what my parents might have thought. Maybe their generation didn't think quite so much about this stuff though. I'll never know.

Independence Day

It was party central at 1 Kotemy Circle this Independence Day. The entire family was present, plus Em's boyfriend Kevin (a doll) and Mel's friend Katrina, like one of the family and a recent Duke grad. We enjoyed some of the best weather of the summer over the July 4th holiday, what a well deserved treat! Festivities included a family dinner at the Boathouse in downtown Edgartown.

Em and Kevin

Mel and Katrina

Then an old fashioned perfect beach day with lots of friends and their families lasting well into the early evening.

The Fam

Kids enjoyed a new game introduced by the college crowd, twirlie bat (minus the alcohol of course). A relay game between two teams --the short kids versus the tall kids. Each team had a member twirl 8 times around a bat and then run bases like in baseball. The first team finished won. I think it was the short, young kids because they don't get dizzy.

Twirlie Bat

On the big day we sat poolside and soaked up the sun, enjoyed the fireworks over the harbor, and danced the night away to some cool tunes. Sunday was a relaxing day with a cookout in the backyard
with the traditional July 4th cake

The must do photo with Katrina (who did a great job filling in for Mel who was at work, they do look like sisters)

as we said farewell to Melissa, Katrina, Em and Kevin. It was the last hurrah weekend for Melissa who is now back at Duke and beginning her summer research job. I hope everyone had as much fun celebrating and creating memories as we did. Ahhhhhhhhhhh, summer!

Graduation Day

The diploma

Better late than never even if it is a little out of order with my other blog entries. Jim and I now have three daughters that have successfully graduated high school from The Bolles School.

The sisters

The graduation ceremony for our favorite youngest daughter (as Jim would say) was a proud and memorable moment for us as parents.  Not only a milestone in her life, but a chapter closed on what has been the main focus in our lives since the kids were born. No need to repeat the long, sad story of the rainy week, weekend, ceremony snafus, and Jim's medical woes. Colleen will be starting at Villanova on August 20. Stay tuned for what is next in her future......

It's A Beach Day!

Is this beautiful or what?

A small, but happy gathering.

It's A Beach Day! def.- (noun) any day during summer on MVY regardless of weather; first coined by Joseph Eck circa 2003.

Nothing can stop a beach day on MVY not wind, not fog, not rain, not cold temps. Luckily, we had none of those yesterday as we celebrated the first official beach day of 2009. It was a small crowd, but a content and happy one. The plovers are nesting, 800+ nests this year so beach space will be at a premium. Do they really need to have that many nests? There will only be about 1/2 mile of beach available for the next 30 days (how long it takes to hatch, etc). That takes us into late July some of the busiest days of the season. Come first, come often. I think that will be our motto this summer. So, get out your towels, chairs, umbrellas, sunscreen, grills, blenders, wine, beer, food, games, etc and get ready to head to the beach for some crazy fun and sun.

Inspired

Another quiet morning on MVY. I am catching up on my blog reading which I really don't do very often. Although, every time I read the blogs I am following I am inspired to write more. I found my first blog to follow through the newspaper in Jacksonville, FL. Since then the author, a young 27 year old divorced woman, remarried with a 6 yr old son, has written two additional blogs and I am following them all. I really enjoy what she has to say. If you are interested they are: SingleMomLand, MarriedinSingleMomLand, and RunningFromTheFatLady. Also, Em's friend Emily has a blog that I just started to follow Marginalian.

So, today I am inspired to write on my own blog and recommitted to writing more often. I guess I'll make this another goal for the summer along with reading the Boston Globe cover to cover each day, not putting on any poundage over the summer months while we are eating and drinking each weekend, and sewing on my projects a little each day. I just bought a special OttLite for sewing which I hope helps me to be able to distinguish between similar colors better.

I know everyone likes to see pictures, so here are a few I want to share:

Sorry for the Delay- - Weary Traveler

Okay, taking some heat for not blogging for awhile. It has been a hectic month. Where to start, hmmmm. Colleen's high school graduation was held indoors for the first time in 21 years and only the 3rd time in 77 years. We had 24 inches of rain in 5 days. So should we cut the school some slack that Jim and I not only didn't sit together, but he had to watch on closed circuit tv from an alternate location? I think not, the powers that be had almost a week to get it together. Anyway, it was a lovely ceremony, she looked beautiful in her white dress and white gloves. The after party was a success even with a deluge of rain as we were arriving. Another Bolles graduate. She is off to Villanova in August! We had a pleasant weekend with Peg and Nancy and the girls. Jim unfortunately was not feeling up to par, long story short we spent 2 of 3 days in the ER, tests that came back normal, different meds, bad reaction to meds, back to Boston.....turns out it was a bad gout attack.  He was feeling ready for golf by Saturday so I knew he was on the mend.

Colleen and I began our road trip to MVY and the summer months. En route we had a lovely visit with sisters Jo and Kate and their families. Stopped for an overnight in the Poconos with Aunt Mary. We had good travel weather, and it was cool and crisp by the time we got to Boston on Sunday in time for Em's 24th birthday. We had a lovely dinner in the North End (endless yummy restaurants). It was a long four days of travel, but that should be the last Florida/Boston road trip!  Two of Colleen's best friends surprised her by flying to Boston for a visit. She was so surprised! They drove over to MVY with us on Monday afternoon. Feels good to finally be here, lots of work to get settled for the summer and I am exhausted every evening. As a matter of fact, I am ready for bed now! Jim gave me an Apple Macbook for our anniversary so I am getting acclimated. Unfortunately, no pictures yet. I am having issues with my camera, hope to have a resolution this weekend and I can post some pics. The girls have started work, business is slow although I think there seems to be a good amount of people here for the shoulder season. Hope to have the house in tiptop shape for when Jimbo comes over for the first time next weekend. For now....I'm exhausted zzzzzzzzz.

Cat Photographer

I read an article recently in the Jacksonville Times Union about a couple who was curious about what their cat did all day. They found a small camera that took a photograph every few minutes and attached it to the cats collar. They found out that their cat was quite the wanderer and socialite. They are actually now selling the pictures and making money from them. Where do people come up with this stuff!?

4.19.2009

OMG PROM!!!

Prom was last night and she (Colleen) looked beautiful. Judge for yourself..

Actually, they all looked beautiful...

She attended solo in a large group of girls and guys. They ate at the Tree Steakhouse, it took forever so by the time they arrived at the dance most of the seniors had already departed. So they went to the after party at a friends house. Not sure how much sleep she had, but she said it was a great last fling. Graduation is only 1 month and 4 days away. It will be a hectic last month with senior week, grad night, environthon state competition, visit to Villanova with dad, grad parties, exams (of course), and then the big event itself on 5/23. Hardly a last fling!

She's Legal!!

Here's Sleeping Beauty on the start of her long awaited 21st BIRTHDAY! Just as beautiful and angelic as the day she was born oh so long ago. Em and dad flew in for the celebratory weekend. As the girls headed off to the spa for the day, dad headed for the links. Although the weather was foggy the air was warm and the hot tub welcoming. We quickly donned our robes

and proceeded to relax poolside with a glass of champagne prior to our services and lunch.

All that relaxing was exhausting.

Here is dad and his girls primed, primped and ready for a night on the town.

Our server brought a sampling of drinks for Melissa to taste. Yummy.....

A fun day for sure. Unfortunately, after 36 holes of golf and 6 hours of spa we were all bushed, home, and in bed before the stroke of midnight.

Happy Birthday Mel. Hope you had a good time. We all love you!!!
